At least, 10 persons narrowly escaped death, yesterday, in Asaba after a tipper, reportedly experienced brake failure, veered off its lane and skidded onto the incoming lane along the ever-busy Nnebisi Road.
The near-fatal accident occurred in the morning, causing panic among road users and residents of the Delta State capital.
According to eyewitnesses, the tipper lost control after its brakes failed and careened into the path of an oncoming keke, a popular tricycle used for local transportation, and other vehicles just in front of the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
The keke, which was carrying its driver and three passengers, barely avoided being crushed by the heavy vehicle. While the keke rider fortunately managed to dodge the tipper, he was severely injured and not as lucky as his passengers.
“It was a terrifying moment. The driver of the keke swerved just in time to avoid a head-on collision with the tipper. We were all shocked, but thank God no life was lost,” an eyewitness recounted. The incident caused heavy traffic congestion on Nnebisi Road, as other motorists tried to navigate around the accident scene at the time of this report.
