BY ISAN ISIOMA CARLOS

Seventy Catholics who had undergonet comprehensive training in the faith were confirmed during the sacrament of Confirmation at St Joseph Catholic Church, Akumazi Umuocha, Ika North East Local Government Area, Delta State.

The confirmation was a highlight of the parish’s 25th anniversary celebration, which drew dignitaries and parishioners from various backgrounds.

Adorned in white garments bearing their confirmation names, the candidates were administered the sacrament by the Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Odogwu Elue.

In his homily, Bishop Elue cited the story of Prophet Elijah and the widow, emphasising that no one can outdo God’s generosity. He shared, “Generosity without selfish interest brings unlimited blessings from God.” He further urged the faithful to practice genuine generosity from the heart, which God loves and rewards.

Addressing the confirmation candidates, the bishop charged them to uphold the Catholic faith, put all they have learned into practice, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide them. “As true soldiers of Jesus Christ, you must always stand to defend the Church and the gospel,” he said. Bishop Elue also urged them to join pious societies, remain active in church activities, and stay steadfast in their zeal for the faith.

The bishop also expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the successful construction of the new parish house, offering prayers for their blessings and rewards.

During the second phase of the event, the chairman of the 25th anniversary celebration committee, Sir J.B. Okwuoma, thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the occasion. He recalled how the idea of celebrating the anniversary was warmly embraced by parishioners, leading to tireless efforts to make it a reality.

Sir Okwuoma revealed that three categories of individuals were specially honoured during the celebration: the church’s foundation members, notable contributors, and parents of Akumazi Umuocha’s indigenous priests. Sir Okwuoma also praised the parish priest, Rev. Fr Pius Okawele, for his dedication and leadership.

The highlight of the day was the unveiling and blessing of the new parish house by Bishop Elue, alongside the Obi of Akumazi Kingdom, HRM Obi Henry Ezeagwukpo Jegbefume I, clergy, and parishioners.
