Madam Tell us a little about your background
I am Dr. (Mrs.) Nkem Imarue. I’m a devoted Christian, community-focused philanthropist and a professional interior designer. My faith and service are at the heart of everything I do. I was born in Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria and grew up in a loving family with six siblings. My academic journey took me to one of the best institutions in the world where I earned an honour degree in Public Administration and later a doctorate in Humanities from Triune Biblical University, USA. I also pursued specialized studies in interior designs. I’m the founder and CEO of Freshstart Interior and Exterior Design Services, an award-winning design company based in Asaba, Delta State. I’m also the founder of the Circle of Godly Women Organization (CGWO), a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering women and children through various charity projects.
What does your business entails?
At Freshstart Interior and Exterior Designs, we transform residential and commercial spaces into beautiful and functional works of art. Our mission is to create environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply reflective of our clients’ unique personalities and needs. We pay close attention to detail and approach each project with a passion for design, ensuring that every space we work on is tailored perfectly to our clients’ preferences.
How do you provide solution your customers’ challenges?
We start by getting to know our clients and understanding their needs through meaningful conversations. This is what we call human-centered design. We listen carefully; whether the concern is about colour choices, design selection, or budget constraints. By truly understanding their challenges, we’re able to provide solutions that are not only creative but also practical. We guide our clients through three phases: pre-engagement, where we gather all the necessary information and set clear expectations; engagement, where we collaborate closely, presenting design concepts and post-engagement, where we continue to support them, making adjustments as needs arise to ensure they’re completely satisfied.
Who are your ideal customers?
Our ideal customers are individuals and businesses who want to elevate their living or working spaces. They value exceptional designs, pay attention to detail and the perfect blend of style and functionality. These clients seek solutions that enhance their environments and reflect their commitment to quality and elegance.
Can you describe a typical day for you?
My day starts with prayer and meditation, seeking guidance from God. After that, I do a quick routine exercise to keep myself flexible and energized. As a devoted parent, taking care of my kids is a key part of my morning activities. I’m very committed to my work, so I often skip breakfast to make sure I get to the office early. My mornings are spent reviewing and updating projects so I stay on top of everything. I also have meetings with clients and collaborate with my design team to keep our creative energy flowing. In the evening, I cherish time with my family, where we reflect on the day programmes and plan for the next day.
How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
I’m grateful to have married a wonderful man who has been incredibly supportive. His assistance, no doubt has been invaluable, especially in balancing my business and family responsibilities. Entrepreneurship has taught me to appreciate the importance of quality time with my loved ones and to lean on God for strength and wisdom in managing both work and home. This journey has shown me how crucial family support and faith could be achieving harmony.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by a desire to glorify God through my work and to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Seeing the joy on my clients’ faces when their spaces are transformed is incredibly fulfilling.
How do you measure success in this regard?
To me, success is fulfilling God’s purpose for my life, making a positive impact on others and finding joy and contentment in both my work and my family. It’s about creating a legacy that honors God.
Do you believe there is a formula for becoming a successful entrepreneur?
There’s no strict formula for success in entrepreneurship, but there are guiding principles. Discipline is key. You must clearly define your vision and pursue it diligently and consistently, no matter the challenges. Being prayerful is also essential; faith and trust in God play huge role in achieving success. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not rely on our own understanding. Success is a combination of hard work, perseverance and faith in God.
What is your favourite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
I love the thrill of success. There’s nothing quite like setting ambitious goals and then achieving them. It’s incredibly satisfying to start a project and see it through to completion. Beyond personal success, I value the freedom to create and innovate, turning visions into reality. I also treasure the opportunity to mentor others and make a difference through my work and charitable efforts.
How did the idea for your business come about?
Freshstart wasn’t just an idea; it was a gift I discovered early in life. As a child, I was obsessed with arranging and decorating spaces. As I grew older, I realized this was a gift, and I explored it further. Freshstart emerged from my passion for design and my desire to create spaces that inspire and uplift. It’s more than just a career—it’s a calling.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Discipline is crucial. Anyone can dream of being an entrepreneur, but discipline sets successful ones apart. Set clear goals and visions and don’t be limited by your current circumstances. Keep striving for greatness. The economic environment may not always be favorable, but stay focused and excel in what you do. As the Bible says, your gift will make room for you. Keep learning, stay focused and surround yourself with supportive mentors. More importantly, seek God’s guidance in everything you do.
If you could start your business over again, what would you do differently?
I would focus even more on seeking divine direction from the start. Every step guided by prayer and faith leads to a more fulfilling journey. Honestly, I wouldn’t change much because the path I took was a gift I recognized early but I would be more disciplined, focused and open to continuous learning. I’d also prioritize collaboration and surround myself with like-minded individuals.
What are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
First, it’s your mindset. Success starts within. If you have a positive and growth-oriented mindset, you can overcome any challenge. Second, discipline keeps you focused on your goals. Third, consistency is crucial. No matter the circumstances, keep showing up and putting in the effort. Eventually, your hard work will pay off.
What tricks do you use to stay focused in a busy schedule?
To stay focused, I make it a point of duty to write out my plans and daily tasks. This keeps me on track. I prioritize tasks, delegate when necessary and maintain a healthy work-life balance by setting aside time for rest and family. And of course, I rely on what many call luck or chance, but I call it the grace of God.
Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My greatest inspiration comes from my faith in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Bible, the oldest book with the most recent information, is full of wisdom and encouragement. Every chapter has something to teach, and every verse carries a message. The scriptures have been my constant source of inspiration. This inspiration is often manifested through my husband.
What business-related book has inspired you the most?
While I’ve read many books, the Bible is unmatched as my ultimate guide. It offers profound wisdom, encouragement and direction for every aspect of life and business. The greatest business secrets are hidden within its pages.
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
(Laughs) That’s a tough one. I have so many experiences and lessons to share. Let’s just say it’s something to look forward to.
