THE Delta State Government has said that only qualified candidates will be admitted into its technical colleges, as it has implemented measures to plug any loopholes that could undermine the integrity of the entrance examinations.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Technical Education, Hon. Smart Ufoh while monitoring the admission examinations into prevocational and vocational classes at the Model Technical College, Asaba.
Addressing journalists after the monitoring, the technical education commissioner expressed satisfaction with the exercise, commending the Permanent Secretary and the school authorities for the coordination.
‘’We want the best for our schools. We do not want to take mediocre and at the end of the day, run into trouble. We want to select the best from society and train them to acquire the necessary skills required for their future careers.
‘’The assurance we are giving is that the exam has been written and the best will be selected. There is no room for backyard entry and that is why this exam is organized. If there was room for backyard entry, we would not have organized the exams in the first place.
‘’Our assurance is that the best will be selected; only the best candidates will emerge as a result of their scores from this exam’’ the technical education commissioner said.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the Technical Education Ministry, Dr (Mrs) Gloria Patrick-Ferife estimated that about 700 students sat for the entrance exam in the pre-vocational category (Junior Secondary 1) while about 300 students sat for the vocational category (Senior Secondary 1).
She said the candidates would be tested in three broad categories; Mathematics, English and General Paper, even as she hinted at plans to improve admissions into the technical colleges. ‘’Another important information is that we are starting our boarding schools such that persons who do not live in Asaba, for example, can have their kids school in Asaba.
‘’This boarding facility is across the technical colleges in the state and it will commence from September 16 2024 with the boarders coming a day earlier’’, Dr Patrick-Ferifie said.
She urged parents to take advantage of the initiative of the state government and send their children to technical colleges to acquire practical skills that would, in addition to the benefits of conventional schools, also boost their self-reliance abilities.
