Shaibu Remains Edo Legitimate Deputy Governor —Appeal Court

By Favour Percy-Idubor,/Benin

THE Court of Appeal, Abuja Division has dismissed an appeal brought before it by the Edo State House of Assembly in the impeachment case against the reinstated deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu.

This ruling follows a previous judgment by Justice James Omotosho, which also ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement and the restoration of his security and salaries from the date of his impeachment on April 8, 2024.

The Edo State House of Assembly had appealed the judgment by Justice J.K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja which based it’s decision on the fact the Assembly did not follow proper procedures.

The Assembly claimed Shaibu was impeached based on allegations of perjury and leaking government secrets and that he refused to appear before the investigative panel.

It also argued that it followed constitutional requirements for impeachment, with 18 out of 19 members present voting to impeach Shaibu, while one abstained.

However, the Court of Appeal dismissed the Assembly’s appeal, ruling that Shaibu remains the legitimate Deputy Governor of Edo State.

Meanwhile, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe has described Saibu’s victory as victory for Edolites and democracy.

Tenebe who visited the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu Shortly after the ruling by the Court yesterday in Abuja, said the outcome of the Court of Appeal ruling against the Edo State House of Assembly is a clean valetion of his right as deputy governor.

While appreciating the state chairman for the visit, the deputy governor said is a victory for democracy, and victory for lovers of democracy and those that hate oppression.
