Following public condemnation , the Chairman, Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior has announced the immediate suspension of levies charged operators of Point of Sale (PoS).
The chairman, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Jonathan Onwuka, which was made available to journalists, condemned the action of the purported local government committee currently issuing the levies against operators of POS in the council area.
In the statement, the local government boss disowned the source of the letters, saying they were not staff of the council.
“My attention has been drawn to public complaints emanating from levies issued by one of the committees the Ika South Local Government contituted a few weeks ago purportedly as the Point Of Sale (PoS) committee.
“I wish to express my disapproval and to state that they are not our staff. Business owners must pay taxes and levies but the rates must be fair”, Ehiwarior said.
“I have also directed suspension of the collection of levies from operators of POS for now, until these matters are resolved. I expect calm and restraint from all parties”, Ehiwarior said.
