Delta Child Rights Amendment Bill Passes Second Reading

A bill for a law to amend the Delta State Child Rights Law, 2008, yesterday sailed through second reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly

Leading debate on the bill, the lead sponsor and member representing Ika North East State Constituency, Hon. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola said that the amendment to the already existing law became necessary arising from several factors relevant in it’s implementation.

Hon. Okowa-Daramola, who explained that the amendment sought, covers 12 sections of the principal law, as the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development Services would take full responsibility in it’s implementation rather than Ministry of Education originally stated in the principal law.

The lawmaker also referenced on sections 10 and 113 of the amendment bill and urged other members of the house to support the speedy passage of the bill.

Other Lawmakers who spoke in favour of the bill, particularly the  Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Arthur Akpowovwo, Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Festus Okoh, Chief Whip, Hon. Perkins Umukoro, Honourables Oboro Preyor, Augustine Uroye, Bridget Anyafulu, Ferguson Onwo and Oloye Pereotu amongst others harped on the import of the bill, just as they urged for it’s speedy passage

They commended the lead sponsor, Hon. Marylyn Okowa-Daramola for initiating the amendment bill which according to them, is apt and timely.

The bill was referred to the House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs and Humanitarian Support Services for further legislative scrutiny and to report back on the October 3, this year.

Meanwhile, the house at yesterday plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, also screened and confirmed two nominees for appointment as Secretaries to Local Government Councils.

The nominees included, Mr Aluge-Obia Kainji, Ika South and Mr John Ewenede, Ughelli South who were earlier asked to re-appear for screening and possible confirmation due to improper documentation in their Curriculum vitae.

The Speaker, who announced their confirmation, congratulated the nominees and encouraged them to serve their respective councils in the capacity they have been nominated for.
