PRESIDENTS-General of Communities in Delta State have been urged to collaborate with the state government on regular sanitation to improve the wellbeing of the people and avoid deadly diseases.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani made the appeal at Ekete community in Udu Local Government Area while monitoring this month’s environmental sanitation exercise.
While commending the President-General and leaders of Ekete community for desiltation of drainage systems and using tippers and payloader to remove debris to the dump site, Jamani said that the communal effort in cleaning the environment should be sustained since government cannot do it alone. He used the exercise to appeal to other communities to emulate this gesture by engaging in communal efforts in cleaning the environment.
Jamani urged the people to see drains as their own. He said it was wrong for one to sweep and put the debris inside the drain.
On his part, the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Hon. (Chief) Vincent Oyibode cautioned motor, tricycle (keke) and motorcycle park operators parking indiscriminately, while he ordered them to clean their environment or risk being disbanded. He warned traders not to display their wares on walkways and not to trade under high tension wires. He expressed sadness at the unkempt environment in which most traders sell foodstuff and tasked them to always clean their environment before displaying their wares as well as to have waste bin or sacks to keep their wastes and later, dispose them accordingly.
The President-General of Ekete community, Hon. (Chief) Johnbull Asu said the desiltation of the drains was not by chance but planned, while he promised to sustain it monthly so that the area can be free of debris and waste water.
