THE Asaba branch of the Olomu Progress Union (OPU) has made a significant contribution to education of children in Olomu Kingdom by donating branded notebooks to all public schools in the area.
This initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities across communities within Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Led by Mr. Paul Owumi and Emmanuel Kuejubola, Union members visited several primary and secondary schools, where they noted the urgent need for perimeter fencing to improve security and protect students.
Among the schools that benefited from the donation are Ovwor Mixed Secondary School and Okpare Grammar School, along with others throughout the kingdom.
During the presentation, Mr. Owumi emphasised the importance of supporting education, saying, “There’s no greater gift we can offer than our support for education. We also selected the top male and female students from each secondary school to fund their WAEC enrollment, as a form of motivation for others.”
He added, “It’s clear that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of funding education. We felt it was important to make a positive impact on the lives of our children, and this motivated our actions.”
In addition to the notebook donation, Owumi announced plans for further support initiatives, highlighting the recent engagement of the Ministry of Education with some schools to address pressing needs.
Another member of the team, Emmanuel Kuejubola, reiterated the Union’s commitment to community support. “We believe in giving back to our communities. Our children, who will succeed us, deserve access to quality education,” he said.
He also mentioned that the Union is actively communicating with relevant authorities in Delta State to raise awareness about the challenges faced by local schools, particularly with the State Universal Basic Education Board, led by Hon. Samuel Mariere.
Kuejubola assured that they would bring these concerns to the attention of the Commissioner for Education and the State Governor to seek further assistance.
Principals and head teachers from the visited schools expressed their gratitude for the Olomu Progress Union’s generous gesture.
They urged other community members and organizations to offer additional support, highlighting the lack of perimeter fencing, office furniture, and adequate desks for students as significant challenges they face.
