Delta ASUSS Chairman Underscores Teachers’ Role In Devt Of Society

THE Delta State Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary School (ASUSS), Comrade Kenneth Okoh, has described the role of teachers in the society as one that cannot be over emphasized.

Okoh gave the assertion while speaking with our reporter in Asaba, the state capital.

The ASUSS Chairman said, the society remains the way it is, because of the role they have played in the lives of many persons.

Speaking on the theme of the year’s World Teacher’s Day, “the worth of the teachers”, he said; it was unfortunate that the society that neglected teachers was already reaping from it, and prayed that it shouldn’t get to a level that we begin to look for teachers to teach our children.

He said that it was so sad that even parents, guardians and relatives of the students they tutor places no value on the teachers who take their time to impact knowledge on their children, rather they turn out to attack them and in most cases it leads to the death of the teachers for instilling discipline on the children.

He urged teachers not to relent in their service, but to satisfy their conscience while handling the children as though they were theirs.

Okoh called on Journalists to help remind parents that they did not bring their children to teachers to be pampered when they misbehave, adding that disciplinary actions meted on those who misbehaved are necessary to shape the child as future leader.

He noted that the concept that teachers were been neglected, was wrong as the society stands to lose the more, whenever a teacher is been attacked, adding that parents who attack teachers turns out to attack the future of their children, as it will take much conviction to bring another teacher to teach in the school where a fellow teacher was victimized.

The ASUSS Chairman, however, commended the state government for the prompt payment of secondary school teachers’ salaries and for the instant payment of promotion arrears, adding that the state government ranks top amongst the states in the country not accumulating salaries and arrears.
