The Delta State Government officially launched a Measles Vaccination Campaign at a flag-off ceremony in Otor-Udu, in Udu Local Government Area.
This initiative is a crucial step in safeguarding children from the highly infectious measles virus.
According to the programme Coordinator, Dr Mercy Oghroro, measles can lead to severe complications, including blindness, deafness, and even death, if left untreated.
Oghroro said the measles vaccine is a safe and effective immunization that provides long-lasting protection against the virus, adding that it is typically administered in two doses: the first dose is given between nine and 12 months, and the second dose is given between ages four and six.
According to her, the vaccine not only protects the vaccinated individual but also helps establish herd immunity, reducing the overall spread of the disease in the community. The programme coordinator announced that the campaign would run from October 12 to 18, 2024, at various primary healthcare facilities, targeting children aged nine months to five years, with the vaccine provided free of charge.
The state technical facilitator, Sir Elvis Akalisi, stressed the importance of educating the community about the vaccine’s benefits and dispelling any myths surrounding its safety.
Similarly, the Udu Local Government Chairman, Vincent Oyibode urged parents to participate, stating, “A healthy society is a disease-free local government.”
