D-CARES: LIPW Unit Trains, Distributes Work Tools To Youths In Umuezei Community

By Ebi Nieketien

The Labour Intensive Public Workfare (LIWP) Unit of Delta Communities Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) recently trained, distributed work tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and deployed beneficiaries to their various work sites in Umuezei Community, Oshimili South Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the Technical Head of the Unit, Engr. Chukwuka Ojei said that the essence of the exercise was to orientate the beneficiaries on the modalities of the work they were expected to do so they would be well informed on what public work entailed and the parameters of working with D-CARES.

He noted that the programme aimed to give gainful employment to youths between the ages of 18-45 years and so far, they have employed over 18,000 beneficiaries in various communities across the state.

‘’We are giving employment to the poor and vulnerable youths in the state, who are paid a monthly stipend for carrying out small labour-intensive public works in their communities of abode. The programme has been very impactful in various ways because the direct beneficiaries have monies paid to them which has a multiplying effect on their communities

’’We are here to not only train them but also to provide work tools and deploy them to their various work sites’’, he said.

Ojie mentioned the unit had previously visited some communities such as Oko-Amakon, Oko-Anala, Okwe, Cable, West-End, Ugbomanta, Umuonaje, Umuagu, Oko-Ogbele, and Umuaji.

While expressing gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his generosity towards the programme, the technical head advised the beneficiaries to take the training seriously as it was instrumental to determining their success on the job.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Martins Moweta lauded the state government for the initiative and promised they (beneficiaries) would maximise the opportunity given to them.

The beneficiaries were trained on topics ranging from social safeguards to environmental safeguards, grievance redress mechanisms, and gender-based violence.
