. Slams Content Creator Over Criticism Of Govt Projects
the member representing Sapele Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Perkins Umukoro has condemned a recent video posted by a content creator, Mr. Kenneth Ugeh, which portrayed the government as neglecting critical infrastructure in the area.
The lawmaker made the remarks during a visit by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sapele chapter to his residence in Sapele.
Responding to Ugeh’s criticisms of road construction in Sapele, Umukoro was unequivocal in his disapproval. “There’s just one thing I want to respond to, and that’s the issue of this content creator who showcased a street like Shell Road, claiming that the government is not trying. I condemn what Mr. Kenneth did in totality. Whether we like it or not, Sapele is just one of the 25 local governments in the state,” he said.
Umukoro highlighted the progress made under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, particularly in road construction. He noted that 12 roads in Sapele Local Government were currently under construction, dismissing any claims that the projects had been abandoned.
“The governor has not only approved these roads on paper but has also started construction. These projects are ongoing, and Sapele cannot expect to have all its roads completed in one year. It’s a four-year government,” he added.
The legislator explained that more roads would be built as the administration progresses. “If the governor is working on 12 roads now, by the end of four years, we should be expecting about 40 to 48 roads. Some of these areas, like Hausa Road to Commercial Avenue, were places we never expected would be touched in our lifetime,” Umukoro stated.
“I’ve always found joy in being associated with the poor. It’s not about strength or entitlement, but by the will of God. This visit gives me eternal joy,” Umukoro remarked.
He reaffirmed his dedication to representing Sapele and his belief that journalism plays a vital role in shaping society. “Journalism is the fourth arm of government. It is expected to shape the other three arms, especially when they fail to meet the expectations of the people.”
Urging journalists to play a constructive role, Umukoro appealed for a balanced approach in their coverage of government activities. “I want you as journalists to see yourselves as part of the government. Fine, you are structured to be independent, but when the truth is glaring, you should also help in condemning misinformation. Criticism is necessary, but so is praise where due,” he advised.
Hon. Umukoro concluded by emphasizing his openness to dialogue and his commitment to the people. “I’m always open to you. If there’s any misinformation, feel free to reach out to me for clarification. I’m here to serve and I welcome any opportunity to improve the lives of my constituents,” he said.
The lawmaker expressed his gratitude for the visit, emphasizing his deep connection to the people and his passion to serve the masses.
Earlier, the NUJ Chairman in Sapele, Comrade Nelson Agbajor, said the visit was an opportunity for the journalists to thank Hon. Umukoro for his visible contributions to the Sapele community.
