Oil Theft: Diri Reaffirms Collaboration With Military

BAYELSA State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the Defence Headquarters’ Joint Monitoring Team to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Governor Diri expressed satisfaction that the military, which had previously been accused of involvement in crude oil theft, is now spearheading efforts to change the narrative around oil bunkering in the Niger Delta region.

The governor made this statement when the Joint Monitoring Team, led by Major General Jamil Jimoh, visited him at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Governor Diri voiced optimism that the cooperation between security agencies and key stakeholders in the oil sector would significantly reduce oil theft and boost production.

He emphasized that the state had already shown its dedication to curbing crude oil theft, pipeline sabotage, and environmental damage by establishing local committees and using public outreach, such as jingles, to educate the youth.

Diri highlighted that an increase in oil production would translate to a higher allocation from the 13% derivation fund, while criticizing the current practice where states rely on monthly federal revenue distribution. He reiterated his call for true federalism, which would allow states to manage their resources and pay taxes to the central government, encouraging localized development.

He also urged oil companies to replace outdated equipment to prevent frequent failures, which are often blamed on sabotage.

“As a state, we’ve already begun addressing this issue. Previously, there were allegations that the military and other security agencies were involved in oil theft. Now, the military is taking the lead, alongside other security agencies like the police and NSCDC, which shows we are closing ranks.

“It’s disheartening to hear that our own military has been accused of participating in oil theft. If those tasked with stopping it are involved, it seems there’s no end in sight. But I’m glad you’re leading this effort, and we will fully support you in increasing oil production and protecting our environment. Rest assured, Bayelsa State is ready to collaborate,” the governor stated.

Earlier, Major General Jimoh, leader of the monitoring team, requested the state’s support in their efforts to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism. He praised Governor Diri’s development initiatives and actions to address the issue, noting the team’s role in securing oil facilities in the Niger Delta and improving production.
