Defiant Ladies U-17 Tournament To Empower Girls Through Football, Social Advocacy—Ehiabor

By Ifeanyi Uwagwu

An astute football administrator and a leading figure in the development of female football in Nigeria, Mrs Henrietta Ehiabor  has announced the Defiant Ladies U17 Tournament, a five-day competition dedicated to using football as a platform for promoting education, health, and social welfare among young girls.

Set to kick-off at Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, from Wednesday, 6th November 2024, the tournament will see eight teams competing, including Royal Queens Football Club, Delta Babes Football Club, Mighty Wanderers Ladies Football Club, Female Titans Football Club, Thunder Bay Football Club, Brave Heart Football Club, Dream Star Ladies Football Club, and Fortress Ladies Football Club.

According to Mrs Ehiabor, the tournament aims to go beyond competition by addressing critical social issues affecting girls in Nigeria, such as teen pregnancy, child marriages, trafficking, and gender-based violence. It also promotes education, health, and hygiene, aiming to empower young female athletes and advocate for the Girl Child. “This tournament is a platform for celebrating young girls, fostering unity, and encouraging them to pursue both sports and personal development,” she said.

The event opens with team arrivals and the draw on 6 November, followed by the commencement of matches on 7 November. A special seminar focused on social issues and female empowerment will take place on 9 November, and the closing ceremony, along with the final match, will occur on 10 November. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, runners-up, and outstanding individual players, with departures scheduled for 11 November.

Mrs Ehiabor hopes the Defiant Ladies U17 Tournament will encourage young girls to embrace the values of sportsmanship, respect, and friendship, creating a nurturing environment for both athletic and personal growth. The tournament is also part of broader efforts to expand and enhance women’s football in Nigeria, providing a valuable opportunity for young female athletes to engage in competitive yet respectful gameplay and celebrate the spirit of unity within the football community.
