THE Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau (DSOCB) has launched the Delta State New Identity Project, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening civic values, fostering community engagement, and promoting positive attitudes among citizens.
The initiative was announced during a courtesy visit by DSOCB members to the Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory, Mr. Patrick Ukah, at the Old Secretariat in Asaba. The visit underscored DSOCB’s commitment to collaborating with state agencies in advancing civic values and driving attitudinal change in Delta State.
In his remarks, the Director-General, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe outlined the project’s three key focus areas: The Bureau’s mandate, the Delta Value Charter, and citizens’ responsibilities.
Dr. Oghenes ivbe explained that the DSOCB’s mandate, based on statutory responsibilities assigned when it was established in 2016, seeks to promote participatory democracy by encouraging active citizenship in governance and constitutional processes. The mandate emphasizes attitudinal change through values like honesty, hard work, and moral integrity.
He highlighted the importance of patriotism in fostering civic responsibilities, community service, and respect for national symbols and traditions, creating a society rooted in mutual respect, tolerance, and ethnic harmony—values essential for Delta’s diverse population.
The Delta Value Charter, he explained, forms a central pillar of the New Identity Project, establishing principles that reflect the ideals of the Nigerian National Anthem. The Charter aims to uphold values such as patriotism, integrity, justice, and unity, encouraging citizens to respect the state’s constitution and laws, foster peace, and promote environmental protection. By instilling these values, the Bureau hopes to create a framework in which Delta citizens collectively contribute to state growth and cohesion.
Dr.Oghenesivbe emphasized that the New Identity Project’s holistic approach is designed to shape a Delta identity rooted in integrity, responsibility, and collaboration, ultimately inspiring a stronger sense of belonging, shared purpose, and collective progress among Delta citizens.
He commended Mr. Ukah and the Capital Territory’s efforts in advancing the state’s capital, noting the significant progress in innovation within Asaba and beyond.
Mr. Ukah, in response, praised the DSOCB’s New Identity Project as a valuable step toward building a more harmonious Delta andapplauded the DG of Orientation Bureau and his team for their initiative towards making the state a better place, as he listed some achievements of the State Capital Territory.
Mr. Ukah further encouraged the DSOCB to conduct advocacy visits to traditional rulers, market associations, and professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), amongst others to raise awareness about the project’s goals.
