THREE separate bills; Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, Southern Delta University, Ozoro (Establishment) Bill, 2024 and, Delta State Special Offences Court (Amendment) Bill, 2024 were yesterday, read the third time on the floor of the State House of Assembly.
All three Executive bills were subsequently passed at yesterday’s Plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor.
While the passage of the Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill and, the Delta State Special Offences Court (Amendment) bill came after they had earlier sailed through first and second readings on the floor of the State Assembly, the Southern Delta University, Ozoro bill, yesterday, gained accelerated legislation as it was also read the first and second time on the floor of the House
The bill, according to the State lawmakers, was given accelerated legislation because of its unambiguous nature.
Leading debate on the bill, the Deputy majority leader and member representing Ika South state Constituency, Hon Festus Okoh, noted that what the bill sought to achieve was a change in the name just as he added that with the change in name, the university promises to accommodate more faculties.
To ensure its third reading and passage, the House suspended all relevant sections of the House rules, particularly order 12, rules 79-83 of the standing order of the Houbills.
He said, “Dear colleagues, I must commend you for your untiring efforts and legislative ingenuity in the passage of this bill. It has further demonstrated our commitment and dedication towards ensuring that Deltans get the best. Thank you so very much and God bless you”.
Addressing journalists in his office shortly after the passage of the bills, the Chairman, House Committee on information and majority leader of the House, Hon Emeka Nwaobi noted that the passage of the bills was yet another demonstration of the House’ s commitment towards ensuring that Deltans get the best.
