Foundation Urges Improved Criminal Justice Dispensation

The Acting Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Peter Maduoma, has stated that despite efforts to raise awareness, the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) remains very low in  the country, while he called for an improved system.

Maduoma expressed this concern during a two-day workshop held on Thursday in Asaba, the state capital. Commending the support from Mark Author Foundation, Mr. Maduoma called for stronger efforts to improve the criminal justice system to ensure full compliance and to reshape approach to justice

He was represented by Programme Office, Mr. Ebere Mbaegbu.

He said, “For us in CLEEN Foundation, it is crucial that the discussions in this two-day workshop lead to significant improvements in our collective work advancing ACJL across the nation. The positive news is that ACJA has been enacted as law in all 36 states of the Federation. However, the effectiveness of any law depends on its efficient implementation by responsible agencies and the public’s understanding of the benefits it brings to society.”

“The implementation of ACJL remains very low and we call for greater efforts in this regard.

In his goodwill message, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, was represented by Assistant Chief State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Sylvia Dumudje, Mr. Ohwovoriole added that the ACJL has brought major reforms to Delta State’s criminal justice system, mobilizing all stakeholders to ensure full enforcement and success of the law.

A member of the State Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Mr. Chuks Okpunor, affirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring timely and fair justice, promoting transparency and accountability, and supporting victims and witnesses in seeking justice.

Okpunor highlighted ACJMC’s mandate to monitor and evaluate criminal justice administration in Delta State and Nigeria at large, identifying areas for improvement.
