Advocate End To Social Vices, Oba Of Benin Charges Alma Mater

BY FAVOUR PERCY-IDUBOR, BENIN

HIS Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin has urged the old boys of his Alma mater to support traditional institutions in curbing social vices prevalent in the society today.

The royal father gave the advice when members of Immaculate Conception College Old Boys Association (ICCOBA) visited the Oba’s Palace in Benin City where they kindled a strong bond with their co-alumnus.

Oba Ewuare II, who was jocular in interaction with his guests, charged ICCOBA to keep their integrity intact as touch bearers of society in the development of their Alma mater.

The Benin Monarch, who gave a rare insight into his experience in Catholicism, which he stressed formed the bedrock of his religious knowledge and the Bible, also reflected on Nigeria’s civil war that took a toll on the academic calendar.

“It’s important to do advocacy with the children and educate them on the dangers of social vices, especially cultism, human trafficking, drug abuse that impact negativity on society”, he said. Oba Ewuare II also said, “I should introduce myself. I am Ewuare, the second, formerly known as Prince Erediauwa, also formerly known as Prince Akenzua when I was a student at Immaculate Conception College (ICC), Benin. We have to go down memory lane.

“When a young man then in my class came to pay respect a moment ago, he was surprised that I recognized him. Should I tell everyone what happened in class those days? If you want me to say it, I will say it. If you want me to keep quiet, I will surely keep quiet. Okay, I won’t.”

Oba Ewuare II also pledged his support for ICCOBA, which is billed to mark its 80th anniversary late November 2024 and perform duties assigned to him as grand patron of the association.

Addressing the Oba, president of ICCOBA, Ighodalo Edetanlen, drew the attention of Oba Ewuare II, an ICCOBAN, to the programme of activities lined up for the forthcoming ceremonies, and solicited prayers and royal support towards its endowment fund launch to assist indigent students.

Prayers by Chief Edwin Uwoghiren, the Ima of Benin on behalf of the Palace, preceded the group photograph by members of ICCOBA with Oba Ewuare II.
