Climate Change: DTSG Moves To Reduce Greenhouse Emissions

  • Sets Up Coordination Committee

FOLLOWING Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s approval for the constitution of a technical working group/Inter-ministerial committee, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Jamani Ejiro has inaugurated the Committee on Climate Change.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Environment Commissioner said the establishment of the committee was a crucial step towards ensuring proper coordination of climate change activities in the state.

He said that climate change is a global crisis that requires urgent and coordinated actions from all sectors of society as it poses significant threats to the planet and its inhabitants.

Speaking on the aims and goals of the committee, Jamani said it is to enable effective reporting of greenhouse gas emission reduction actions in all sectors of the state economy, adding that they are to make a real and lasting impact on reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Speaking further, the Commissioner said it is hoped that the committee which is comprised of experts from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), will be engaged in the ministry’s quest to carry out a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory in the state and ultimately set up an emission reduction target for the state. He said he was optimistic that the climate change team would play a crucial role in shaping the state’s response to climate change, adding that the inauguration was in line with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda. In appreciation, the Chairman of the Committee, Mrs. Vivian Briggs, called for the team’s cooperation to report Greenhouse Gas emission reduction efforts in the state to the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). She said the reporting must be transparent, accurate, complete, consistent and comparable.
