Quality Healthcare, Critical To Poverty Alleviation –Akpoveta

BY JUMAI NWACHUKWU

THE Director-General of Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, has stressed the critical role of quality healthcare in alleviating poverty across Nigeria.

Speaking recently at an interactive session with hotel owners in Asaba, Akpoveta noted that access to affordable and efficient healthcare services is a cornerstone for economic and social development in the country. Akpoveta also stressed that poor health often plunges individuals and families into poverty, as the financial burden of medical expenses can deplete resources. “Having access to quality health services would reduce the level of poverty in the state and country at large,” Akpoveta stated, highlighting the strong correlation between health and economic stability.

According to Akpoveta, the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme has been at the forefront of providing healthcare coverage for residents of the state, especially those in under-served communities. He said the scheme has prioritized universal health coverage, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations can access life-saving medical care with N7, 000.

Akpoveta noted that the aim of the meeting was to call for increased collaboration between the private sector, stakeholders and international partners to strengthen the healthcare system in the state, as he underscored the importance of sustainable health policies and investment in medical infrastructure, personnel, to achieve long-term poverty reduction through improved health outcomes.

He reiterated that Delta State has recorded positive change in the healthcare system since it commenced operations in January 2017 and has been praised for addressing healthcare challenges to promote equitable growth and social stability across Nigeria.

In his remarks, a consultant to DSCHC, Mr. Charles Ojakovo FCIB urged the hoteliers to encourage their employees to key into the scheme as it will help them and their families have access to quality healthcare.

Meanwhile some of the participant applauded the Commission for their efforts in ensuring that people have access to quality healthcare.
