SHUDEF Hosts Outreach To Promote Diabetes Awareness

BY DINMA BIGWA

TO help individuals with diabetes lead healthier lives, the Support for Human Development Foundation (SHUDEF) has organized a medical outreach aimed at raising awareness about the prevention and management of this silent killer.

Diabetes, often asymptomatic, goes undetected until serious complications arise. To combat this, SHUDEF conducted free blood sugar tests for residents of the Ibusa Community in Oshimili North Local Government Area, emphasizing the importance of early detection and proactive health management. The Executive Director of SHUDEF, Mr Emmanuel Ogbogo, who has battled the disease, spoke passionately at the event about the dangers of neglecting one’s health and the widespread impact of diabetes. He shared his experience, revealing that the foundation was inspired by his hospitalization due to diabetes, which lasted five months.

“This program was born from my own diagnosis and hospital stay. Many people are unaware of their medical conditions. Knowing your health status is crucial for effective treatment,” Mr. Ogbogo emphasized. He also appealed to the government and private sector to support diabetics by subsidizing medication costs. “Diabetic patients face high drug costs with little advocacy. We urge the government and stakeholders to help make these essential medications more affordable.”

Meanwhile, the State Coordinator for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Dr. Rita Opene, highlighted the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, stressing that lifestyle choices and family history play significant roles.

She urged individuals over 40 to monitor their diets and avoid tobacco use. On the sidelines, Gloria Uchunor, a dietician from Ibusa General Hospital, provided practical advice on managing diabetes through diet. “Portion control and incorporating vegetables into daily meals are vital for regulating blood sugar.
