Okuama Community Voices Concerns Over IDP Camp Closure

INDIGENES of Okuama community, currently residing at the Ewu IDP camp in Ughelli North Local Government Area have expressed concerns over the Delta State government’s decision to close the camp by December 2024, without ensuring proper safety measures for their return.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the Secretary-General of the Ewu Clan Development Forum, Amb. Edewor Egedegbe, acknowledged the government’s efforts in providing shelter and infrastructure for displaced persons but questioned the readiness of the community for reintegration.

“We commend the government’s efforts so far, especially the construction of schools and health centres, but we are concerned about returning to an area that is still not safe for living. The farming season is approaching, and the whole year has been lost for our people,” he said.

The community, which was displaced following the brutal killing of 17 Nigerian Army personnel in March 2024, hopes that the government will prioritise their safety before closing the camp.

“We appeal for the inclusion of Okuama in the 2025 budget to ensure adequate development and address the ongoing boundary issues,” Egedegbe added.

While the community is eager to return to their homes, they seek assurances from the government that their safety and livelihood will be secure. They remain hopeful that the government will act swiftly to resolve the challenges facing the region.
