FOIA CDS Group Sensitises Students On Information Rights, Ethics

THE Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Community Development Service (CDS) group in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State has organised a sensitisation programme to promote transparency and proper information dissemination among students.

The event, held on November 26, at Famous Height College, aimed at educating students on their right to access accurate and reliable information under the FOIA.

During the programme, corps members outlined the significance of the FOIA in fostering accountability and good governance. They stressed the dangers of misinformation, urging students to verify sources before sharing information. “The FOIA empowers citizens to demand accurate information from public institutions, a crucial step in combating misinformation and promoting transparency,” they noted.

An interactive session followed, with students engaging in asking questions about how FOIA applies to their daily lives. Practical examples were provided, including seeking public information and addressing school-related concerns like fees. Corps members also shared tips on ethical communication, the responsible use of social media, and the value of truthful reporting.

The management of Famous Height College expressed gratitude to the corps members, acknowledging the impact of the programme in shaping the perspectives of young Nigerians. “This initiative equips our students with essential knowledge about transparency and accountability, which are critical for their development as responsible citizens”, a school representative said.
