A 10-year-old boy, identified as Destiny Emafakpoto, drowned while swimming with friends at a beach in Oteri-Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, as warnings from a local seer to avoid the river were reportedly ignored.
According to a community source, “A seer had warned everyone against going to the river to bathe or swim, but this warning was disregarded. Some even mocked the river goddess.”
The source further revealed that the boy’s body remains missing. “The body is still underwater as his corpse is yet to be recovered,” the source said.
Efforts to reach the President General of Oteri- Ughelli community, Chief Simon Egbe for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, a security official from the Ughelli Area Command disclosed that a search and rescue operation had been launched.
