THE wife of Delta State Deputy Governor, Lady Catherine Onyeme has marked her 49th birthday, yesterday, with a charitable outreach at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba and Asaba Specialist Hospital.
Onyeme del ivered packages containing baby essentials, toiletries, nutritional items, and financial aid. The beneficiaries included babies born on her birthday (December 4), children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and patients in the male wards, among others.
In her remarks at both hospitals, Lady Onyeme shared her joy in celebrating her birthday through charitable acts, expressing gratitude to God for good health. She also commended the medical personnel for their selflessness and dedication to patient care.
During her visit to the NICU, Lady Onyeme interacted with mothers of premature babies, offering words of encouragement and financial support for medical bills.
Speaking with The Pointer after the exercise, the Chief Medical Director of Asaba Specialist Hospital, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, praised Lady Onyeme’s initiative. “Her Excellency’s visit is both inspiring and impactful. Her generosity reflects her compassionate nature and her dedication to the welfare of the vulnerable. The supplies and encouragement she brought will greatly enhance our efforts to provide quality care,” she said.
Similarly, the Head of Clinical Services and Training at FMC, Dr. Omo Ekene, applauded the gesture, highlighting it as evidence of her dedication to Deltans’ well-being, bringing hope to patients and inspiring staff.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Rita Uzoma, whose baby is in the NICU, expressed a heartfelt gratitude for the gesture. She offered prayers for the Onyeme family. Mr. Patrick Isichei, a beneficiary at the male ward recovering from surgery, expressed appreciation, wishing Lady Onyeme many more years ahead.
In an interview with The Pointer, Lady Onyeme emphasised the importance of philanthropy. “Last year, I spent my birthday at an orphanage. This year, I chose to celebrate with babies born on my birthday and other patients. I encourage everyone who has the privilege to lend a helping hand to others to do so because in giving, we find true fulfilment”, she said.
