THE ongoing violence between the Eiye and Maphite cult groups in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State has claimed another life, with 45-year-old Solomon Christopher being the latest victim.
Solomon, a non-cultist but reportedly related to a member of one of the rival groups, was allegedly attacked and killed by six suspected cultists at Okpalefe Junction last week.
Local sources report that the crisis has spiralled out of control, with numerous casualties and growing destruction.
According to a resident, “Two people were allegedly killed at Okpalefe Junction, while one person was shot but survived. Cultists are now targeting their rivals’ homes, and if the individuals cannot be found, their properties are destroyed. We call on the Delta State Police to intervene urgently, apprehend those involved, and restore order.”
In a related incident, another man was reportedly shot in the mouth on Esiso Street near Ashawo Quarters in Agbarho, adding to the escalating tension in the area.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that nearly 12 people have died since peace talks between the two groups failed. The violence has prompted many indigenes of Agbarho residing outside the state to cancel plans to return home for Christmas.
A senior security source, who confirmed the killing of Solomon Christopher, also disclosed that a member of one of the cult groups, identified only as Sam, was attacked and shot shortly after Solomon’s death.
Additionally, the source revealed that another father of three was killed a few days later, though the victim’s identity has not been confirmed.
In the Oteri-Ughelli axis of the community, another clash between the Eiye and Maphite groups was reported in the Izigwe area. While no lives were lost in that confrontation, the situation remains tense.
Efforts to reach Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, for comment were unsuccessful. Residents have urged the police to intensify efforts to curtail the violence, arrest the perpetrators, and restore peace to the embattled community.
