A fire late on Wednesday night at the Ogbosisi Timber Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, resulted in significant damage to goods. A user on X, identified as Omaletocracy, shared videos of the incident, showing traders attempting to salvage their items as the flames spread. The post was captioned: “Head Bridge Market Onitsha is on fire 18/12/2024.”
In a statement on Thursday morning, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed that no lives were lost in the fire. Ikenga also mentioned that the area had been cordoned off to prevent potential looting.
“The quick response of the police and fire service personnel at 8:45 pm on 18/12/2024 helped to bring the fire under control,” Ikenga stated. “We have also secured the area to prevent individuals from exploiting the situation to steal goods.”
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, though the total value of the destroyed goods has yet to be determined.
