DTSG To Honour Outstanding Journalists With Excellence Awards

BY RITA OYIBOKA

In a landmark initiative to promote journalistic excellence, the Delta State Government has announced the launch of the Delta Awards for Media Achievement (DAMA).

Modelled after the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, DAMA seeks to recognise and reward journalists and media practitioners who exhibit exceptional professionalism, creativity, and dedication in their work.

The award ceremony, slated for January 2025, promises to be a high-profile event, attracting dignitaries from across the country. In addition to receiving certificates and plaques, winners in each category will be awarded cash prizes.

In a statement issued by the Executive Assistant (Media) to the Governor, Comrade Norbert Chiazor, “The awards are designed to encourage journalists to critically and effectively tell the Delta story across various sectors while amplifying the key programmes and policies of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori under the MORE Agenda.”

“Additionally, it aspires to elevate professionalism and ethical standards within the media industry. Through this initiative, journalists are encouraged to embrace their constitutional responsibilities with integrity, contributing meaningfully to the state’s development and the nation’s progress.”

It read further, “The awards feature numerous categories to accommodate the diverse contributions of media practitioners. From recognising the overall best journalist in reporting on Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda to celebrating excellence in print, broadcast, and online journalism, the programme also acknowledges the work of photojournalists, social media influencers, and female journalists. Prestigious honours, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award for veteran journalists, further underscore the significance of this initiative.”

To ensure fairness and transparency, a panel comprising some of the finest experts in the Nigerian media industry has been assembled to adjudicate the entries. Winners will be selected based on professional competence and strict adherence to ethical journalism practices.

The competition is open to all journalists and media practitioners reporting on the social, political, economic, and cultural facets of Delta State. Only works published or broadcast in 2024 will be eligible for consideration. Submissions, including hardcopy samples for the Best Newspaper category, must be received by 15 January 2025.

Media practitioners across Delta are encouraged to seize this unique opportunity to celebrate their achievements and enhance their professional standing.
