DELTA State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has issued a stern warning to teachers across the state who neglect their duties to pursue their private interests, emphasizing that the ministry will not tolerate such acts. She said that any teacher found guilty will face sanctions in accordance with extant civil service rules.
Mrs Ezewu stated this during a phone interview with our correspondent while highlighting the government’s resolve to ensuring commitment account- ability and upholding educational standards.
Several commentators had indicated that some teachers in schools across the State are engaging in truancy, skipping school and abandoning their duties for extended periods without official leave or justifiable reasons.
According to her, absenteeism among teachers has impacted the state’s efforts to provide quality education to students.
“Absenteeism in our schools is unacceptable. Teachers play a critical role in shaping the future of our children, and any behaviour that compromises this responsibility will not be tolerated,” she said.
The commissioner noted that her ministry has received multiple complaints from school administrators about the negative impact of teacher absenteeism on students’ academic performance and morale.
“The administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is determined to create an environment where every child receives the quality education that they duly deserve.
This requires dedication from teachers, and we will hold those who fail to meet their obligations accountable,” she added.
She urge all teachers to prioritize their duties and re- affirm their commitment to their profession, while also calling on school management boards to cooperate with the government in enforcing these measures.
