Tragedy struck in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State as three individuals, including a female toddler, lost their lives in a devastating boat mishap on the Bonny Sea.
The incident was reportedly triggered by a sudden oceanic storm that destabilized the boat.

According to reports, 22 passengers were aboard when the mishap happened. Out of the number, 19 were rescued by swift intervention by local divers and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

The Rivers State Police Command, which confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, described the tragedy as unfortunate.

“I can confirm the incident. It is quite unfortunate. There were 22 passengers onboard; 19 were rescued, and three lost their lives, including a female toddler,” she stated.

Iringe-Koko noted that the boat capsized near the Yellow Platform in Bonny Island.

In response to the tragedy, Bonny Local Government Chairman, Anengi Claude-Wilcox, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Council, John Gabriel-Pepple, Claude-Wilcox conveyed deep sorrow over the loss.

“The Bonny Local Government Council is deeply saddened by the tragic boat mishap that occurred on the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route claiming the lives of two adults and a toddler.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims. May God grant you all the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. The Council shares in this grief and pain, and we pray that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the statement read.

Claude-Wilcox further lamented reports that another passenger boat witnessed the incident but allegedly failed to render assistance.

“It is disheartening to learn that a passing boat did not stop to rescue victims fighting for their lives,” he said

The chairman urged boat operators and travelers to prioritize safety by observing weather conditions and adhering to established safety protocols to prevent future mishaps.
