DESTMA Partners Police To Enhance Traffic Rules Enforcement

BY JUMAI NWACHUKWU

THE Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) has taken a significant step towards improving traffic management and policy enforcement across the state by partnering with the Delta State Police Command.

This collaboration is aimed at creating a more organized and efficient traffic system while enhancing road safety for all residents.

The Director-General of DESTMA, Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, announced the partnership during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, alongside members of the agency’s board in Asaba.

According to Hon. Okiemute, the initiative underscored DESTMA’s commitment to fostering a safer traffic environment in Delta State.

He emphasized that the partnership would strengthen their capacity to address pressing challenges such as illegal parking, reckless driving, and other traffic violations that pose risks to public safety.

“This partnership with the Delta State Police Command is a significant step forward in our mission to restore sanity on the roads. With the support of the police, we are optimistic that stricter compliance with traffic regulations can be achieved, ultimately reducing road accidents,” Okiemute stated.

He further noted that the collaboration reflects a shared understanding of the need for synergy between critical agencies in maintaining law and order, particularly on the roads.

DESTMA, renowned for its role in regulating vehicular movement and ensuring compliance with traffic laws, sees this partnership as a pivotal step in achieving its objectives.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Board, Chief Peter Idion, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner of Police for his unwavering commitment to protecting the lives of Deltans. He also highlighted the need for the police’s assistance in enforcement, acknowledging that DESTMA cannot achieve its goals alone.

“This partnership is expected to involve joint operations, training, and extensive public education programs aimed at ensuring a disciplined driving culture across the State. With the collaboration between DESTMA and the Delta State Police Command, stakeholders are optimistic about a safer, more organized, and efficient traffic system for the state.” He said.

Responding to the Agency, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda pledged the command’s full support for DESTMA’s initiatives.

He emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility and assured that resources would be deployed to bolster DESTMA’s enforcement activities.

However, CP Abaniwonda appealed to DESTMA to prioritize public sensitization campaigns on traffic rules to ensure residents are well-informed about traffic policies before strict enforcement begins. He stressed that awareness and education are critical in fostering compliance and promoting a culture of road safety.
