Don’t Tarnish Delta’s Image, Oborevwori Tells Pilgrims

BY EBI NIEKETIEN

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has charged the 272 Christian pilgrims who departed for Israel and Jordan, yesterday, to conduct themselves with dignity and serve as worthy ambassadors of the state throughout their spiritual journey.

Speaking during a farewell ceremony held in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu emphasised the importance of the pilgrimage as a time for spiritual rebirth and intercession.

“This tour is first and foremost for spiritual rebirth and, secondly, for spiritual tourism. We are a prayerful state, and we believe in God who has always seen us through. You are designated intercessors, not only for yourselves but for the state and Nigeria,” the Governor said.

He urged the pilgrims to uphold the values of the state, cautioning them against engaging in illegal activities or any conduct that could tarnish the state’s image.

“As you go there, truly seek the face of God. It is not just a holiday. You need to know that you are ambassadors of this state. Ambassadors don’t live by terrible examples; they showcase the qualities of where they come from,” he added.

Governor Oborevwori further highlighted the significant financial commitment involved in sponsoring the pilgrimage and warned against using the opportunity for personal gain or illegal purposes.

“This is not a trip to do drugs or engage in illegal activities. The number, 272, is large and a big expenditure for the government at this critical time. If the government is spending money on this, it is for a positive reason, not for you to malign or tarnish the image of the government,” he cautioned.

He also warned against using the pilgrimage as an opportunity to abscond, urging the participants to return home with a renewed spirit and a commitment to positively impact their communities.

Earlier, the Chairman of the State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Sylvanus Okorote described the pilgrimage as a spiritual retreat and encouraged the pilgrims to make the most of the experience.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his support despite the ongoing infrastructural development across the state.

Similarly, the leader of the delegation and Commissioner for the Bureau of Special Duties, Mr Ejiro Etacherure, and the Executive Secretary of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, Rev Fr Christopher Ekabo, also advised the pilgrims to maintain good conduct and adhere strictly to instructions throughout the spiritual exercise.
