THE State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State, has appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over the promotion and welfare of primary and secondary school teachers in the state.
The appeal was made in a communique issued at the end of the SWEC meeting, jointly signed by the state Chairman, Comrade Titus Okotie, Secretary, Comrade Dan Basime and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Adagboke Emmanuel, at the Teachers’ House, Asaba.
SWEC expressed reservation over the stagnation in the salaries of graduate primary school teachers on Salary Grade Level 14.
According to SWEC, while teachers in neighbouring states, such as Edo, Ondo, and Anambra enjoy career progression, their Delta State counterparts had not been that lucky.
The union also decried the selective promotion of eligible secondary school teachers, especially the inability of many to progress to Salary Grade Level 17, and as such, called on the Post Primary Education Board to resolve the issue.
Another major concern raised was the payment of primary school teachers’ salaries without corresponding pay slips. They alleged that this practice exposed teachers to potential financial exploitation by payroll officers and demanded an immediate end to the anomaly.
They signaled if the issues remain unresolved, they would consider an industrial action.
