UN Women Urges Stronger Grassroots Support For Women Empowerment

BY RITA OYIBOKA

As part of its inaugural International Women’s Day celebration, the United Nations Women Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Coordination Mechanism Platform in Delta State has emphasised intensified efforts to empower women, particularly at the local government level.

Speaking at the event held yesterday at the Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba, the organisation’s state coordinator, Dr. Eris Jewo, stressed the urgent need for sustained advocacy and increased funding for gender-focused initiatives.

The gathering convened representatives from several women-focused organisations, including the Professional Women’s Association of Nigeria (PROWAN), the Forum of African Women Educationists Nigeria (FAWE), the Women’s Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), among others.

“As part of our efforts, we have established an advocacy team at the local government level. This team is dedicated to promoting the inclusion of gender equality and women’s empowerment programmes, as well as advocating for necessary funding and resource mobilisation,” Dr. Jewo explained.

She lamented that, unfortunately, such programmes are often dismissed at the local government level as merely ‘women’s issues’ and consequently receive inadequate budgetary allocations. “Despite these challenges, we must work collaboratively, with government agencies, NGOs, community leaders, and the private sector, to cultivate an environment where women can fully realise their potential. This includes ensuring access to education, healthcare, and the resources necessary for economic independence,” she stressed.

Dr. Jewo also highlighted the programme’s significance in raising awareness about gender equality and securing vital support for women-focused initiatives throughout Delta State.

“Earlier this week, we visited schools to distribute sanitary pads, a crucial component of empowering the girl child in education. Many girls miss school for three to four days each month due to menstrual hygiene challenges, which directly impact their education. Some even resort to menial labour to afford sanitary products. Therefore, the need for intensified efforts towards women’s empowerment, especially at the grassroots level, cannot be overstated,” she added.

In her remarks, the Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Hon. Princess Pat Ajudua reaffirmed her commitment to championing women’s rights and welfare.

According to her, “Women play a critical role in the development of society, yet they continue to face significant barriers in education, employment, and political representation. We must continue to push for policies and initiatives that empower women, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities and resources. The government remains committed to supporting programmes that enhance the economic, social, and political inclusion of women in Delta State.”

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry for Environment, Dr. Minnie Oseji, addressed the importance of mental health management for women. She urged women to prioritise rest, embrace family planning, and invest in their careers to enhance their well-being.

The event also featured an art and craft exhibition, where members showcased handmade clothing, headwear, slippers, and other locally crafted items.
