ANAMBRA State Government has announced a ban on cell phone use in all secondary schools.
The directive, issued by the Chairman of the Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Mrs. Nkechi Ikediugwu, at the State’s Cultural Day celebration in Awka, empowers school principals and teachers to confiscate any phones found on students.
The government cited the disruptive influence of phones on students’ concentration and academic performance as the reason for the ban, aiming to create a more disciplined learning environment and enhance academic excellence, a key focus of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
The announcement also included a call for greater efforts to preserve and promote Igbo cultural heritage within the education system.
“The increasing use of mobile phones by students during school hours has become a serious distraction to their studies.
“I am authorizing Principals and Teachers to seize phones from students who come to school with them so that we can ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without the interference of phones.
“Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is making significant investment in education to promote academic excellence and instill discipline in students”, she noted.
Earlier at the occasion, Mrs. Ikediugwu called for concerted efforts aimed at preserving and promoting Igbo Cultural heritage through the instrumentality of education.
