STUDENTS of the College of Nursing Science, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba – Onicha–Uku Campus, have been urged to commit themselves to academic excellence to replicate their training in real-life practice upon completion of their studies.
The charge was delivered by the Governor of Delta State, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, during the institution’s maiden matriculation ceremony for 111 students, held at the Onicha-Uku Campus in Aniocha North Local Government Area. Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, Governor Oborevwori called on the matriculating students to take full advantage of their new status as bonafide students of the college. He advised them to remain focused, avoid distractions in their academic pursuits, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the institution.
The Governor also expressed appreciation to the former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Ndudi Elumelu, for his instrumental role in attracting the institution to the community. He urged other political leaders to emulate Rt Hon Elumelu by bringing developmental projects to the state.
Oborevwori congratulated the parents and guardians of the matriculating students for investing in the future of their children and wards, noting that education remains the most valuable legacy parents can pass on.
He further charged lecturers to take an active role not only in the academic development of the students but also in moulding their character, ethical standards, and general conduct. He emphasised that upon graduation, the students should emerge as responsible individuals whom society would be proud of. The Governor also warned lecturers against any conduct that would compromise their roles as teachers and mentors.
In his remarks, Rt Hon Ndudi Elumelu congratulated the students and encouraged them to take their studies seriously. As a way of promoting academic excellence, he announced a grant of ₦1,000,000 each for the five best graduating students.
Earlier, the Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Dr Victor Osiatuma, charged the students to rise to the challenge of their new academic journey, which would demand resilience and integrity. He also commended the parents and faculty for their dedication and sacrifices.
