An unidentified middle-aged woman over the weekend committed suicide by jumping over the Ekpan bridge at Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The yet-to-be-identified woman ended her life by falling backwards off the Ekpan flyover bridge leading to the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) shortly after last Saturday’s sanitation exercise.
According to an eyewitness who preferred to be identified simply as Juliet, the woman ascended the bridge just like one of those ‘fitness people’ who jog around in the early hours of each day.
According to Juliet, “I saw the woman on the bridge praying when I was going to my shop. Today being an environmental sanitation day which was observed all over the state, there were very few people and vehicular movement on the road.”
She said, ““the way she was standing on the edge of the bridge, I had thought it was one of those fitness moves because it is a regular sight, seeing gym goers jog across the bridge when going to work in the morning.
“But the next thing we heard was a loud bang on the tarred expressroad. It was the woman. I do not think people expected her to fall off the bridge just like that.
“I feel very sad because I couldn’t help save the woman. I am very angry at the same time because those under the bridge could have caught her. But they all were standing looking at what the woman would do next. Now she’s dead.”
