THE Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, has expressed hope that proper use of engineering skills and implementation of recommendations would accelerate the needed development in Delta State and indeed Nigeria.
These were the views of the engineering body during the 7th Annual Public Lectures and Award ceremony organized by the Warri Chapter of the Institution in conjunction with Automotive and Locomotive Engineers at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun, Delta State.
They noted that Nigeria has the potential to become a developed nation if it applies engineering resources and puts all the necessary mechanisms in place geared towards sustainable development.
The stakeholders, all agreed that Nigeria could become a viable platform for sustainable and economic growth by transforming her energy systems and implementing suggested solutions to her problems in this 21st century.
The chairman of the occasion, former National Chairman NImech E, Engr. Ugochukwu Nzurumike said that the problem with Nigeria was that of not implementing useful suggestions and meaningful recommendations made available to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
According to him “We have provided several solutions, suggestions and recommendations from several conferences, seminars and workshops to the Nigerian Government but they failed to implement them and that has been our problems towards sustainable development”
The chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineering (NImech E) Warri Chapter, Engr. Dr. Olatunji Oluseyi Olorunyomi, FNSE, said that the 7th Annual lecture with the theme: Achieving Sustainable Security and Socio-Economic Advancement in Delta State will focus on professional engineering development, adding that the lecture will help to reawaken the spirit of excellence and determination to rewrite a positive story about Nigeria.
The chairman of AutoEI Warri chapter and Co-host, Engr. Dr. Joseph Momoh, said that the programme remains unique in many ways as it touches the core of professional development as a veritable tool in tackling the ever-challenging issues of security and enhancing socio-economic life.
“This programme will yield the desired result of mapping out footpath of achieving sustainable security and socio-economic advancement in Delta State using professional Engineering Development as a viable vehicle”
In his presentation, the guest lecturer, Engr. Dr. Baba Usman Mshelia, stated that Nigeria has the potential of engaging nearly everybody of working age to do useful work of all necessary machineries are put in place, adding that energy poverty is a state of no sufficient electric power to rely on and other sources of energy not available and fuel not affordable to sustain business, this is one of the major causes of insecurity.
According to him “Hybrid renewable energy generation system for sustainable development is the way-out as part of the solution.
This can be in the form of solar power, wind turbines, Tidal and Hydroelectric where possible in combination with the existing available power sources of gas, turbines and diesel engine on standby to give total coverage to the State”.
Awards were given to some schools that won Science Quiz Competition by Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
