The Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the formation of the 2024 Flood Disaster Management Committee, to address and manage the impacts of flooding in the state.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Eze Emu, who is the Chairman of the Committee, the Commissioner for the Bureau of Special Duties, Hon. Ejiro Terry Etacherure, will serve as Co-Chairman.
Other members include the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ejiro Jamani; the Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Oghenogaga; the Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibuogwu; Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu; and the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Social and Girl Child Development, Ms Orode Uduaghan.
The Commissioner for Information, Hon. Ifeanyi Osuoza; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon Darlington Ijeh; and the Director General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Hon Patrick Ukah, are also members.
The Director General of the Warri Uvwie and Environs Development Agency, Mr Goday Ejinyere; the Special Adviser on Community Enterprises Development, Hon. Dimaro Progress; the Special Adviser on Special Duties, Mr Chuks Ojei; the Special Adviser on Government Affairs, Hon Peter Uviejitobor; the Chairman of the Taskforce on Environment, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu; and the Chairman of the Waste Management Board, Matthew Edema, are included as well.
The Principal Secretary to the Governor (PSG), Barr Lynda Ocholor; the Director of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Karo Ovemeso; and the Dean of Heads of Personnel Management (HPMs), Mr Austin Maduku, are also members, with the Permanent Secretary for the Bureau of Special Duties, Prince Ejohwomu, serving as Secretary.
The committee’s primary objectives are to propose measures for the prevention and management of flooding, address the displacement of people, and suggest ways to provide relief materials to victims. Additionally, the committee is tasked with advising Governor Oborevwori on strategies to achieve these goals.
This proactive approach underscores the Delta State Government’s commitment to mitigating the adverse effects of flooding and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens. The committee’s diverse composition brings together expertise from various sectors, enhancing its capability to effectively tackle the challenges posed by flooding.
