Ahead of the July 13 2024 local government elections in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on politicians to play politics according to the rules.
Governor Oborevwori also advised that politicians should be tolerant of divergent views, no matter the opposition.
Governor Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, made the call today, during the presentation of Staff of Office to Pa Edward Ofuezuem, as the Okpala-Uku of Obikwele in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.
According to the governor, the call was necessary as the state prepares for the local government election billed to take place on Saturday, July 13.
Oborevwori said, “As the state moves towards the forthcoming local government elections, we should play politics according to the rules and be tolerant of all divergent views no matter how opposed they may be to those we hold so dear.
“The beauty of democracy is that it has in-built mechanisms to address all real or imagined cases of injustice. We should use all the institutional framework offered by democracy to handle our differences.”
He expressed joy with Obikwele people saying, “Today is a day of joy and celebration here in this community and I am happy to be part of this memorable event – the presentation of Staff of Office to HRM, Pa Edward Ofuezuem, the Okpala-Uku of Obikwele.
“My administration attaches great importance to the traditional institution, especially royal fathers, who remain not only a vital and reliable link between our people at the grassroots and government but also remain the custodians of our cherished customary values, norms and tradition.
“This partnership with royal fathers has been worthwhile and richly rewarding; we will continue to actively support the traditional institution given the crucial roles it plays in galvanizing and mobilizing our people towards the realization of set objectives.
“Their roles have been very complementary and handy in the areas of immunisation, environmental sanitation, micro-credit schemes and sundry matters where our people are needed to identify with.
“Permit me to use this medium to appeal to all traditional rulers in the State to remain reliable partners in the sustenance of peace and security at all times.
“Our State should remain the delight of investors both at the domestic and international fronts. We should all work as a formidable team to maintain the current enduring peace in our state.
“I urge our traditional rulers to ensure that all inter and intra-communal differences are nipped in the bud.”
The governor assured the people of Obikwele that their request for development would be given priority attention.
The Head of Personal Management (HPM) of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Mr Nelson Enuekwe, had earlier in an address, commended the Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, for the presentation of staff of office to the Okpala-Uku.
He urged the Okpala-Uku to be fair to all his subjects, and further advised the youth and the people of Ndokwa East Local Government Area to take an active part in the forthcoming local government election.
The Obikwele community, in an address presented by MrAfamOseji, said that the Obikwele Kingdom was peace-loving and in full support of the Oborevwori administration.
