The Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro, has flagged off fumigation of public facilities and communities in flood prone areas in the state.
The commissioner, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. (Mrs.) Minnie Oseji, Directors and other staff, flagged off the exercise at Ellu, a rural community in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.
According to the commissioner, the fumigation exercise is in line with the mandate of the Delta State Government to combat and prevent pests and vector in flood prone areas by reducing the rate of infestation, especially diseases that affect families and individuals.
He listed some diseases that the fumigation was aimed at to include; cholera, lassa fever, and others.
Speaking to journalists during the exercise at the Primary Health Centre in Ellu, the commissioner said: “Today marked the flag- off of fumigation of communities in Delta South Senatorial district that are prone to flooding.
“The exercise will continue to other flood prone communities across Delta South Senatorial district of the state, including Bomadi, Patani, Warri and others. “Moreso, let me use this opportunity to inform Deltans, especially those living in low land areas, to see the need to move to upland to avoid being caught up with floods that may occur this year as predicted by NIMET.”
Other public facilities in the Ellu zone that were fumigated include; primary and secondary schools, markets in Obie Irri and Obrogo communities.
The Presidents General of Ellu, Humphrey Odhe, who received the commissioner and his entourage, expressed gratitude to the state government for seeing reason for the fumigation exercise in the community.
