By Onoriode Etatsemi

THE Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole SAN, has assured the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS) of his ministry’s collaboration in deepening the Justice delivery system in the state.

Ohwovoriole said this in his office in Asaba when the Controller, Delta State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Services, Mr. Raymond Mbaduwe Nwagu paid him a courtesy visit.

He said that his office and that of the State Controller of Nigeria Correctional Services will work hand in hand in the criminal justice system.

The Attorney-General noted that there was no way the Ministry of Justice could function by just going to court, securing convictions and sending offenders to prison without collaboration with the NCS.

Ohwovoriole commended the State Controller for his mindset that the inmates were not just at the prison for punishment but ensure their development in terms of skills acquisition so that they would be useful to themselves and the society at large.

He told the State Controller that the Ministry of Justice in Delta State has Restorative Justice Unit, adding that the essence of the unit is to prevent minor offences from going to court.

Earlier, the State Controller of NCS, Mr. Raymond Nwagu said that they were in his office because the Attorney-General’s office was one of their areas of coverage, stressing that without the Ministry of Justice, it would be difficult for them to carry out their functions effectively. He solicited for amnesty for some of the inmates, noting that many of them have merited the requirements for them to be granted pardon.

Highpoint of the State Controller’s visit was the presentation of an award of Excellent Service Delivery to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice by Nwagu.

Meanwhile, the State Attorney -General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole also received the team of the Law Hub Development and Advocacy, led by Barr. Austin Ikechukwu who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of their training programme for stakeholders in the administration of criminal justice.
