THE Registrar of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Mr. Jude Okocha, has said that the recent increase in electricity tariff has negatively affected the operations of higher institutions in the country.
He disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in his office at the polytechnic’s permnent site in Ogwashi-Uku.
While condemning the increase, he said higher institutions were research centers and not profit-oriented, especially government-owned institutions, adding that the increment was uncalled for.
The registrar expressed fears thatmore than 300 per cent increment in tariffs could lead to a situation where management of tertiary institutions would increase school fees which according to him may cause unrest in the education sector.
He appealed to the Federal Government to look into the issue and save the educational system in the country.
Okocha said that should the increase in electricity tariff, lead to hike in fees, the less privileged would find it more difficult to send their children to school, describing the situation as unfortunate.
