Hunger Protest: Residents Condemn Shooting By Security Agents In Ughelli North

RESIDENTS of the Ughelli metropolis have condemned the alleged Indiscriminate shooting by security agents stationed at the Otovwodo Junction in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It would be recalled that a combined team of security agents were drafted to mount surveillance at different locations and junctions in Ughelli North to curb any eventualities during the #endbadgovernance and hunger protest staged across the country.

Despite the return of normalcy, security agents are yet to retire to their division and it has continued to cause apprehension among residents.

A resident at Otovwodo, who spoke with our correspondent, expressed disappointment over the alleged shooting by security agents stationed in the area.

The resident, who identified himself as Mr Felix Dietevwe, said “Some of us are glad that peace is returning and commercial activities have resumed partially after the protest. But my concern is the unwarranted shooting during the peaceful demonstration by some trigger-happy security agents.

“At about 4 pm on Sunday, we were running and scampering for safety after we heard some sporadic gunshots, only to find out it was security agents stationed at the Otovwodo junction that was shooting unprovoked.

“We were told that while they were retreating to their police station, they released several shots into the air just to scare people. We want to appeal to the Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda and possibly all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to prevail on the officers to stop the shooting, if they are retreating to the barracks as the people are scared.

‘’We commend their stay in the area for maintaining peace since the inception of the protest and we cannot take that for granted but their shooting sometimes does cause unwanted panic among the people and traders.

“We want the Police Commissioner and the Area Commander to call their men to order as you cannot bring nothing out of nothing.” Dietevwe appealed.

However, our correspondent gathered that after a stray bullet hit a dispatcher, Kester Ben, 27, some protesters engaged security agents on Saturday night and another stray bullet allegedly hit a Disc Joker, identified as DJ Sprint.
