Heavy rains and severe flooding have ravaged Central and West Africa, impacting a staggering 700,000 people across nine countries, just two months into the rainy season.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis, with Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, warning of the dire situation during a press conference.
In response, the UN and its partners have ramped up support to affected governments, providing critical assistance, including food, shelter, water, and sanitation services.
To mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters, the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated $10 million to Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Niger.
As the region struggles to cope with the disaster, the UN’s aid efforts aim to protect millions of lives threatened by climate shocks in sub-Saharan Africa.
