The Ika South Local Government Chairman, Jerry Ehiwarior, has advocated for stringent measures to tackle the high incidence of drug abuse among the youths in the area.
Ehiwarior made the call when the Delta State Commandant of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abubarkar Wadu, paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Agbor.
The council boss said the rising cases of drug abuse in the area have become a source of concern not only to parents but government and other critical stakeholders.
He noted that the proliferation of illegal arms and other acts of criminal activities within the area could be traced to the use of illicit drugs, especially by the younger ones.
The Chairman expressed joy over the establishment of a command by the NDLEA in Agbor, adding, “The establishment of a command in the Local Government Area will help to drastically reduce cases of drug abuse.”
He commended the NDLEA for the initiative, adding that there should be serious enforcement of the laws against drug abuse.
He assured the agency of the support and collaboration of the council, saying that the fight against drug abuse is a collective responsibility.
Speaking earlier, the State Commandant, Abubarka Wadu, disclosed that a new area command has been established in Agbor, to be headed by Mr Victor Isibor, adding that officers would soon be posted to man the command.
He called for partnership with the council administration, especially in the area of enlightenment campaign against abuse of drugs.
