A veteran Journalist Mr. Chukwudi Abiandu has delivered a compelling lecture on the essential role of editing in journalism at a two-day capacity-building training organised by the Delta Printing and Publishing Cooperation (DPPC) for journalists aimed at enhancing the news writing and editing skills of its editorial staff.
The event, brought the critical gatekeeping function that editors perform to ensure the integrity and quality of published content.
According to Abiandu, the editing desk, acts as the newsroom’s quality control mechanism. Every piece of editorial material, whether it be a news report, feature story, or even a cartoon, must pass through this filter before it reaches the audience.
He noted that the goal of editing is not only to correct errors but to enhance the overall quality of the content, ensuring that it is polished and free of mistakes that could harm the reputation of the publication or broadcast station.
“This perspective underscores the universal need for editorial oversight, emphasizing that even the most skilled writers can benefit from the discerning eye of an editor. The process of editing, according to Abiandu, is akin to the function of a filter, which removes impurities and refines the final product, ensuring that the content is clear, accurate, and impactful.” He said.
Abiandu, highlighted that every piece of content is accurate, well-crafted, and ready for publication, as this process is vital in maintaining the credibility of the news organization and ensuring that the public is well-informed with reliable and polished information.
In addition, the beneficiaries applauded the resource person, stressing that with practical advice on crafting effective headlines, knowing the importance of accuracy, brevity, and the use of an active voice, has equipped them with the skills needed to perform their gatekeeping roles effectively, ensuring that published content is both informative and error-free.
