The indigenes gathered to challenge the conditions in their community, as Akwukwu-Igbo, headquarters of Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, continued to pale in influence and significance despite a rich heritage that inspired ethics, morality and positive thinking that once made Akwukwu as the town is called in a short form, a centre of commerce and envy of neighbouring communities.
Hence, on Saturday, December 28, 2024, the long-planned Akwukwu-Igbo Hybrid Economic Summit 2024 became a reality, with sons and daughters of the community converging to take their destiny in their own hands, at the Akwukwu-Igbo Town Hall and around the globe via Zoom, X-Space and Google Meet. For the fact that Akwukwu-Igbo has been a local government headquarters for so long a time without demonstrable dividends of democracy in the community, along with pockets of self-made challenges such as elusive peace posed by land grabbing and the sorts, it was enough to swell the heads of concerned indigenes and to fill their hearts with so much pain and wonder on what went wrong and how to get it right again. The message was indeed clear “to set the roadmap for accelerated development of not just Akwukwu-Igbo, but environs”, hence the theme was all-encompassing, that is “Harnessing Economic Potentials in Communities for Development in Challenging Times.”
Taking the plunge was Ogbuenyi Dr. Tony Anonyai, Co-CEO, Planet Capital Group, with the proposition of a N200 million Akwukwu-Igbo Development Fund. And as if others had been thinking along that line, many not only bought into it, but made it look like an open-ended cheque or even a blank one, with the collective pledge that N200 million would be but a starting point.
But before all else, no words were spared in appreciating those behind the successful hosting of the Summit, notably the Conference Director, Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, former Senatorial aspirant and CEO, African-German Information Centre and members of the planning committee, including Dr. Kenneth Gbandi (Germany), Mr. Godfrey Osakwe, conference consultant, Chief Enyi Doris Mokobia, Kpakpando of Akwukwu-Igbo, Mr. Christopher Agbamuche, Vice President, Bank of America, Ms. Fiona Ngozi Ogbo-Akano (UK), Mr. Maxwell Nnamdi Ogbolu (Germany), Elder Afam Enemokwu, Mr. Sam Nwaeyizia (South Africa). It was gathered that the Summit was ‘powered’ by Akwukwu-Igbo Sons and Daughters in Diaspora and Akwukwu-Igbo Concerned Stakeholders in Nigeria (AEDS).
The summiteers reflected on the welcome Address by Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, CEO, African-German Information Center on behalf of the Planning Committee members, as he set the tone for the panel discussions that were the cream of the Summit. Gbandi in establishing the protocol, recognized His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, His Royal Majesty, Obi Azuka of Akwukwu-lgbo Kingdom, the distinguished Chairman of the occasion, Chief Newton Jibunor, Distinguished Hon. Senator Ned Nwoko Representing Delta North Senatorial District, Distinguished Hon. Member, Ngozi Okolie Representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Distinguished Hon. Chairman, Oshimili North Local Government Area, esteemed guests, ladies and gentlemen as well as distinguished participants. “On behalf of the planning committee and the good people of Akwukwu-lgbo, home and abroad, it is an honour and privilege to welcome you all to the historic Akwukwu-lgbo Hybrid Economic Development Summit 2024. As we are gathered here today to engage in meaningful discussions, share insights and collaborate towards shaping a better future for Akwukwu-lgbo/neigbouring towns and Oshimili North in general, we are confident that the discussions and interactions over the course of this summit will be enlightening, inspiring and productive leading to our expected goals.
“ It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the sudden and tragic passing of Chief Engr. Emmanuel Onochei Monyei, the Odogwu of Akwukwu-lgbo, who was one of our esteemed panelists scheduled to be at this conference today. A few days ago, we received with rude shock, news of the death of another promising son of Akwukwu-lgbo, Mr. Martin Nduka Okwusindi, who was reportedly shot dead in his house in Akwukwu-lgbo.
These deaths, no doubt have left a devastating effect on our collective psychic as a people and we cannot pretend otherwise. But we are very sure that both Chief Engr. Emmanuel Onochei Monyei, the Odogwu of Akwukwu-lgbo, Mr. Martin Nduka Okwusindi and many great sons and daughters of Akwukwu-lgbo who departed this earth in recent times would wish that we stay strong in our collective quest to build the Akwukwu-lgbo that we can be proud of. As we mourn these great losses, let us also use the summit to honour their memories, to fulfill the vision they held dear, the progress and prosperity of Akwukwu Igbo. This is the greatest tribute we can offer them, coming together in unity and ensuring that this Summit achieves its purpose to develop a comprehensive blueprint for the advancement of our beloved community. May I humbly crave your indulgence that we rise for a minute’s silence in honour of Chief Engr. Emmanuel Onochei Monyei, the Odogwu of Akwukwu-Igbo, Mr. Martin Nduka Okwusindi and other great sons and daughters of Akwukwu-Igbo who departed this earth in recent times.
“This Summit was borne out of a shared vision and collective determination to re-define the socio-economic trajectory of Akwukwu-Igbo in response to the current economic realities in today’s Nigeria. We all know that development cannot be left to government alone. In this gathering, spearheaded by Akwukwu-Igbo Sons and Daughters in the Diaspora alongside Concerned Akwukwu Igbo stakeholders in Nigeria, we hope to chart a new path toward inclusive and sustainable growth for our Akwukwu Igbo and its environs.
“The importance of collaborative partnerships in community development cannot be over-stated. Today, we affirm that the people of Akwukwu-Igbo have a fundamental right to economic opportunity, socio-cultural vibrancy and a prosperous future. Together, we must harness our shared resources and collective ingenuity to push the boundaries of what is possible for Akwukwu-Igbo. This is not just an event but a gathering of transformative leaders with a mix of critical stakeholders for an interplay of ideas, as we explore innovative solutions to the challenges facing our world today.
The end product of which is to craft and produce a comprehensive roadmap (blueprint) with measurable milestones for the development of Akwukwu-Igbo and environs. It provides another chance for us to lay a strong foundation for short, medium and long-term economic development plan, guided by a strategic vision spanning the next 5 to 50 years. And step by step, we can create a robust action plan, breaking this vision into achievable goals while adapting to emerging opportunities and challenges along the way. And at end of today’s deliberations, which of course is a continuum, we will develop a workable and concrete plan for the sustainable growth and development of Akwukwu-Igbo.
This plan will reflect not just our aspirations but our commitment to creating a brighter, stronger future for all. At this juncture, the planning committee members is made up of Mr. Godfrey C. Osakwe. Chief Enyi Doris Mokobia, Mr. Christopher Agbamuche, Ms. Fiona Ngozi Ogbo-Akano, Mr. Maxwell Ogbolu, Elder Afam Enemokwu, Mr. Sam Nwaeyizia and yours sincerely, Hon. Kenneth Gbandi. The entire Akwukwu-lgbo indigenes extend their heartfelt gratitude to all our esteemed guests, speakers, moderators, panelists and to all the donors/supporters of this summit, for making this transformative event a reality in the face of many challenges and happenings in the community
“Truly, your contributions and support in showing up today is a clear indication of our collective resolve to let light triumph over darkness in Akwukwu Igbo and appreciations to all our donors which is vital in driving the vision of economic growth and development for Akwukwu-lgbo and environs. And history will not forget you as you have inadvertently written your name on the sands of time for Akwukwu-lgbo development and in reciprocity, we look forward to adoring your name in the proposed Akwukwu-lgbo Hall of Fame.
l thank our distinguished guests, speakers, panelists, moderators and all the participants for your time to be here with us for robust deliberations and discussions. Akwukwu-Igbo Economic Development Summit 2024 was described as a tactical integrated economic development initiative which seeks to bring together diverse stakeholders for collaborative partnership to push frontiers for accelerated development of Akwukwu-lgbo and environs. “The importance of collaborative partnership for effective community development cannot be ignored, likewise, we believe that the right of the good people of Akwukwu-lgbo and environs to economic, socio-cultural and traditional existence to a guaranteed prosperous future cannot be over-emphasized.
It therefore becomes imperative to engage with relevant stakeholders to further espouse the nuances and trajectories of Akwukwu-lgbo with unique advantage for economic and sustainable development
“The summit seeks to provide a forum for transformative gathering of leaders, professionals, development experts and other stakeholders to develop and implement a strategic economic development roadmap for Akwukwu-lgbo amidst the challenging socio-economic and political environment in today’s violatile world. And as a community deeply rooted in tradition but faced with the modem realities of political and economic uncertainties, the summit is expected to serve as a platform for meaningful and sincere dialogue with practical solutions and collaborative actions to dove sustainable development
“A truism, today’s world is fundamentally a circular economy with collaboration and partnership as integral to driving progress and innovations.
Accordingly, Akwukwu-lgbo as a community with a shared sense of vision for development must come together to chart a new course to boost meaningful development particularly in the areas of education, character regeneration amongst the youths, Agriculture, industry, health, security, housing, recreation, Sports, Art and Crafts. Environment and beautification are other areas.
Objectives/Benefits are to develop a comprehensive development roadmap (blueprint) tailored to Akwukwu- Igbo’s unique challenges and opportunities in the current political and economic climate, identify priority areas such as good governance, education, healthcare, agriculture, recreational centres, housing, infrastructure, and youth empowerment that require immediate and sustained attention, explore avenues for funding and investment through partnerships with relevant government and development agencies, non-governmental organisations, private sector, and the Akwukwu-lgbo Diasporas for the establishment of critical infrastructure, Develop strategies for leveraging local resources and assets to support development projects.
And ultimately, translating to economic empowerment at the grassroots’ and improved Internal Generated Revenue. It was also meant to empower local leaders, youths, and SMS entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge necessary to owned and implements development initiatives effectively. Training efforts with talent scouting to make arts and cultural talents employable to contribute to the development of Akwukwu-Igbo will be encouraged, while facilitating continuous workshops and training sessions on topics such as good moral values, good governance, civic duties, digital literacy, security, sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, and community health etc.
“Foster strong community involvement and ownership of the development plans with the traditional institutions, women’s groups, youth associations, and the diasporas, monitoring and evaluation, establish mechanisms for tracking progress and evaluating the impact of development initiatives over time.”
A non-indigene, Austin Uwandulu, founding president, Chartered Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria observed that “although I’m not an indigene of Akwukwu-lgbo, I am presenting this goodwill message, with nostalgia. I have numerous Akwukwu-lgbo sons with whom I shared my formative years In Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku in particular I recall my cheering relationship with Samuel Isiekwena, Christian Ohanma, Anthony Agbagwu and Lawrence Odiakota. Also I appreciate Chief Enyi Doris Oby Mokobia, a go getter, a motivator and a special daughter in whom I am well pleased, they provided me the inspiration. l belong to critical thinkers about Akwukwu-lgbo and do hereby present my dreams for the headquarters of my local government area – Oshimili North.
“Thinking beyond the economy of Akwukwu-Igbo, although the theme of this gathering is ‘Akwukwu-lgbo Economic Development Summit”, I wish to look and dream beyond the economy of Akwukwu-lgbo and peep into the Akwukwu society that I desire as the headquarters of Oshimili North Local Government Area. This is because of the need to envision, holistically what Akwukwu will be in the next 50 years, that is 2025 to2075.
We must think beyond the economy and capture the other critical components of the Akwukwu society namely Political sub-sector of the Akwukwu society, Socio cultural sub sector of the Akwukwu society, Human resource and technology sub sector of the Akwukwu society, Regulatory (mandatory and self-regulatory) mechanisms sub-sector of the Akwukwu society and of course the Akwukwu economic sub sector of the society about which this summit was out to x-ray, digest and put together. Time and space do not afford me the opportunity to discuss these components in details and to highlight the need for synergy that must be in place for a sustainable development to be implanted in Akwukwu-lgbo.
However let me highlight that economic proposals have all failed in the Nigerian society as a whole, so it must be recognized that there cannot be any real development unless and until political society of Akwukwu igbo is developed along with the economy of the town. The Political class, are inherently pollutants in the conduct of any affairs or endeavors as they get involved and contaminate any societal ideas that do not accord with their personal and group interests And since these interest’ are diverse and divergent they frustrate any economic idea no matter how noble and beneficial they may be to the society.
“To this end, I urge this summit to re-orient the political class to key into the overall aspiration of Akwukwu Igbo. This presupposes that Ndi Akwukwu must develop a long-term strategic direction for the town by addressing the posers such as where will Akwukwu-Igbo as a society be by 2075? I tagged this as Akwukwu-lgbo societal aspiration. What endeavors will citizens of Akwukwu-Igbo engage In so that any such societal aspiration for 2075 will come true? Secondly, it must be realized that economic plans that are not rooted in social harmony are dead on arrival I have my doubt concerning the successful implementation of the outcome of this summit. Let me draw your attention to the malaise besieging towns in Oshimili North notably land grabbing and I hope that this summit will address the fundamentals that give rise to land grabbing which in turn tears towns and families apart.
“There is need to emphasize that the major asset of Akwukwu-lgbo is the human resource. Economic ideas that do not factor in human resource acquisition development and deployment directed at the aspirations of Ndi Akwukwu-lgbo will at best be regarded as good on paper. Proper human resources development must address the questions. Where are Akwukwu-Igbo sons and daughters today? What are they doing?, what will they be doing by say 2075?, how will they be developed in terms of inputs that are relevant to the aspirations of Ndi Akwukwu?, how will they be developed locally, state wise, nation wise and globally such that the aspirations of Ndi Akwukwu will not be jeopardized or compromised.
Finally, I want to say that nothing is worse than economic growth that does not develop local regulatory mechanisms. By regulatory mechanisms, I mean both the mandatory regulations by governments in Nigeria and set regulations by traditional values, customs traditions and convention!
“I call for a longer term perspective of development which is real development as distinct from growth. Accordingly I urge you to increase your horizon so that our children will look forward to a better Akwukwu Igbo.”
Notable takeaways from the Akwukwu-Igbo Economic Summit were, besides the N200 million Development Fund proposed by Ogbuenyi Dr. Tony Anonyai, Associate Prof. Eli Gbandi called for a Skills Acquisition Centre to train youths. Gbandi called for pursuit of excellence, having started from Akwukwu-Igbo Grammar School. Hon. Amb. Uju Okolo, Vice Chairman of ONLG announced that the Olie Market being built by the Delta State Government will be completed by the middle of 2025. Chris Agbamuche of the Bank of America, USA announced elaborate plans on security, promising to bring on drones for assured security.
The factional town unions are now unified, hence someone remarked that they are now ready to “grab the land grabbers” and bring lasting peace to Akwukwu-Igbo.
But it was observed that there is no monthly environmental sanitation in Akwukwu-Igbo but that it holds in other parts of the local government area. A notable speaker, who addressed a number of issues, Mrs. May Nwanze called for greater attention to education of girls and women.
Hon. Kenneth Gbandi remarked that it was a successful confab and looked forward to subsequent summits that will see Akwukwu-Igbo grow from height to height in years to come.
