The Anambra State Police Command has announced that it has launched an investigation into a viral video showing an unidentified woman at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of a commercial bank in Nnewi. The woman is accused of swapping an ATM card belonging to a 58-year-old disabled woman and withdrawing a total of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000) in several transactions.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the investigation is underway. He urged anyone with relevant information, particularly residents of Nnewi and surrounding areas, to come forward to help identify the suspect, who may face arrest and prosecution.
Ikenga explained that initial reports suggest the woman posed as someone helping the victim, then swapped the ATM card. Shortly after the suspect left the ATM, the elderly woman received several debit alerts amounting to Two Million Naira (N2,000,000).
He added that the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has expressed concern over the incident and instructed the Public Relations Officer to contact the victim for further details that could assist the investigation. Additionally, the Commissioner has directed that all available intelligence-gathering resources be used to identify the suspect and apprehend any accomplices.
